He@lthfest National Event for TY Students

TY students had the opportunity today to attend He@lthfest 2021, a national event run in conjunction with the National Dairy Council. The event featured experts in the areas of physical activity, nutrition and mental wellbeing.

MC Doireann Garrihy introduced the event before handing over to Greg O'Shea, Ireland Professional Rugby 7s player. Greg lead the students in a short but exhaustive workout. Following this students were introduced to Prof. Niall Moyna (DCU & Operation Transformation). Prof. Moyna highlighted the importance of physical activity for all. He stated that it is especially important as young people up to the age of 30 continually add to their muscle stores yet after this muscle stores are slowly depleted. Prof Moyna encouraged students to become more active telling them to "pick activities you like doing".

Dr Caoileann Murphy, a registered dietitian, looked at a sustainable diet based on the Food Pyramid. Afterwards Paul Gilligan, Chief Exec of St Patrick's Mental Health Services, asked students to "embrace the uncertainty", particularly apt this last year. He highlighted the resilience shown by young people over the last year. The final speaker was Dermot Whelan, Radio Presenter TodayFm, Comedian & Meditation Expert. Dermot told of how he got in to meditation as he had experienced panic attacks due to fatigue, burnout and overworking. He spoke to students about the importance of meditation, how even focusing on your breathing for a few moments can totally re-set your day.

The event had numerous online exhibitions as well, with exhibitors from Bodywhys, NDC, spunout.ie, Cooking with Clona and careersportal.ie . Students were free to access the resources on offer or even engage in online chats with the exhibitors.

Overall a fantastic and very informative event.
