Rugby at St. Jarlath’s College is increasing in popularity with teams competing in Connacht leagues and cups at senior, junior and U14 levels. St. Jarlath’s first tasted success in 2013 winning the Connacht Emerging Junior Cup. In recent years the school has enjoyed regular trips to The Sportsground to compete in cup finals. In 2017/18 the Junior team entered the Development Cup for the first time and made it to the final before losing to Presentation College Athenry.

2018/19 was a memorable year for the school. The senior team entered the Emerging Cup for the first time and defeated St. Raphael’s College in the final. On the same day the Junior team won the Development Cup, defeating Presentation College Athenry, ensuring double success at The Sportsground for the College.

In 2019/20 the seniors competed in The Development Cup for the first time, reaching the League final and the cup semi-final. The U14’s also reached an Emerging Final in the Sportsground but unfortunately suffered a narrow defeat.

The majority of players play with Tuam RFC and the continued support of the club is a massive benefit to the school. In recent years players such as Conor O’Shaughnessy, Ross Fahy, Carl Ward, Dylan Joyce, Sean Brandon and Liam Walsh have represented Connacht at various age grades.
