Irish Physics Olympiad

2010 brought unprecedented success in an untested field for Jarlath’s when Leaving Cert student Michael Moran (pictured with President Fr Brendan Kilcoyne and Vice President Mr. Charles Kelly) finished in first place at the Irish Physics Olympiad. Held in DCU, this competition was to decide the two Irish Competitors in the International Physics Olympiad, this year being hosted in Zagreb, Croatia. The Olympiad consisted of two exams, one a straightforward information test and the other a more involved multiple choice quiz; when the results were tabulated it was Michael who came out on top. He will now travel to Croatia this July to represent Ireland in the International competition, which consists of a five hour theory exam and a practical experiment section. This was the first year a Jarlath’s student had entered the competition, and Michael’s great success shows great hope for the future in the field of science for both him and the College.
