Hurling had been played enthusiastically in both schools in the past. While not quite reaching the same heights of victory as Jarlath’s football teams, through the years they’ve consistently fielded enthusiastic teams that achieved some success in the ‘B’ level in Connaught and occasionally at All Ireland level. Similarly in St. Patrick’s, football was the main sport but hurling was indeed played across various levels through the years, occasionally fielding teams which had some successes in lower levels.
In recent years a lack of coaches and other factors has meant that the hurling has faded in prominence in Jarlath’s, but in the 2010-2011 school year it will once more be played in the school under the guidance of teachers from St. Patrick’s.
